Off to Zambia (08.05.08)

Another early start as today we were off to Zambia. I think I am allergic to Malerone (our malaria medication) as my stomach hurts, I am covered in a burning rash, my joints ache and the corner of my eyes are sore. In summary… I feel crap… but I am sure Malaria is worse.

The plane ride went smoothly, the engine didn't drop off and my luggage was awaiting me at the other end – always good!

On the way to the Waterfront hotel we passed through Livingstone (named after... yes that's right... David Livingstone). The landscape is dry and scrubby but there are also tropical trees. The roads are dusty – this is the Africa I imagined.

Our accommodation is not so great. There is a 2cm gap in our doors for malaria mozzies to fly through, four abreast. The soles of Jon's feet were pitch black after walking on the floor bare foot for about one minute. However, the hotel is on the banks of the Zambezi river and we can see elephants on the other side and the spray of the Victoria Falls in the distance. You can see this spray from miles around. We went on a sunset cruise and saw a family of hippos, some elephants and a crocodile or two. Zimbabwe is on the other side of the river so if Jon or I fall in we need to make sure we swim to the Zambia side. Our travel insurance doesn't cover us on the the left shore! Tomorrow we visit the falls.

One day we will upload pics but it may be when we are on a different continent. Everything here is slow... this is Africa!
