Bon Voyage (01.05.08)

Only one sleep to go… Jon is very excited, Karyn stressed and prone to crying.

What is a holiday without dramas and we have already had one of them and haven’t even left yet!

Yesterday we found out the exciting news that one of the companies we were flying with in South Africa has been liquidated. This is partly due to the minor incident of an engine dropping off one of the planes during take off. $800 later we are back in business… and no it is not covered by insurance (note don’t go with RACV comprehensive in the future).

Off to weigh the backpacks once more… Karyn is upset there is no room for souvenirs in her bag and is not sure which clothes are dispensable to make room for some African carvings. Jon is relieved as this means she can’t go shopping! Although Michelle will no doubt help Karyn find a way around this.

Up at the ungodly hour of 3.30am for our first stop… Sydney!

Moments like these make holidays! As for bringing back souvenirs, you can either get a second backpack and carry it on your front, or mail them home, one by one. I reckon dad got a coconut in the post once from a friend overseas...

Go easy on the souvenirs - you're away a long time, and these days many people get the opportunity to collect their own mementoes. So get what you want for yourself... I'd say - unless you're a confirmed Gift-Giver.
Mailing things will probably be expensive, and doing it from some (many?) of the places you're going on this Grand Adventure could be as dodgy as some of the planes there.
Bon voyage and God speed!
