The End of Our Volunteer Stint (03.09.08)

Yesterday was our last day at Pumamarka and today was our last day as volunteers with Peru’s Challenge. Because of the strike we couldn’t really do anything except hang around the house. This was actually quite good as it meant we had plenty of time to pack (my bag is more full then when I arrived, even though I have posted two parcels back – go figure) as well as chill out.

Terry was up at 8.30am cooking our group lunch. He spent half a day in the kitchen whipping up a feast for our last supper together. It was very good. I don’t know how he did it as the kitchen here is not very good and I wouldn’t have even attempted to give it a go. We have no hot water and have to boil it all in the kettle which died on us today. There is no plug for the sink so everything is washed in a bucket. The stove doesn’t produce much heat and we ran out of gas part way through the meal preparation. The oven burns things and the power points are a health hazard (you risk electrocution if you attempt to plug an appliance in).

I tried in vain to book tickets to Patagonia this evening but after filling in all the details on the Aerolineas Argentinas site I discovered that you can only reserve the tickets. You have to pay for them in Argentina if you want the price quoted, or for another $100US I can get them in Lima. This is very inconvenient. We will have to try and sort something out before we get to Lima or otherwise it will be too late.

Tomorrow we have to go to the airport at 6am even though our flight to the Amazon is not until 10.15am and I have already checked in online (theoretically this means I only need to be there an hour before not four). This is because there is another strike on (not sure of the reasons behind this one) so we have to beat the stone throwers. The only good thing about this is that we are going in with Ross and Sue and Terry and Fiona so we don’t have to say goodbye to them tonight.

I will miss most people here. In the space of a month we have gotten to know a lot of people and have really enjoyed their company. Tomorrow it will be just the two of us again.
